The past is the past, and can't be changed. Nor should it. Our forefathers did what they thought they had to do. The Civil War was armed sedition to create a new nation. It failed. Lincoln and Grant defeated the cause, preserved the Union, and wanted to "bind up the nation's wounds."
It is neither proper at this point in time to try to alter the history nor to condemn those who fought for and against the cause. To destroy statues seems to be a ridiculous attempt to do just that. I think the president is correct. Arrest the little bastards and give them ten years during which they can think it over.
