She considered herself fortunate to arrive in the late summer. The sea had been calm, her swim uneventful; she stepped onto the shore with the sun setting at her back, warm water streaming in rivulets down her legs and tail to reunite with the pink waves. The sand, soft and white, seemed to welcome her onto the island. The little black mare smiled back at the surf, as though thanking it for a pleasant journey, before giving a little squeal and a hop and taking off inland.

She spent the next few days admiring the Falls and the great mountain from which they descended. Having grown up in the mountains, her first instinct was to climb and explore the Peak’s heights, but she had left her old life behind and was determined to explore the flat parts of the island first. Nothing against the mountain, of course; she just needed something new.

She had barely caught the tail end of summer before fall began to creep into the island. Nadine was no fool - she knew the fall season was a dangerous time to be alone, especially in a communal place like this. She often considered striding out into the Common just to see what would happen. Sure, it was the riskiest of places to go during fall, but it also held the highest rewards if she was lucky. Nadine knew she was pretty, even if unusually so; she was lean, velvety black, with miles and miles of raven mane and tail. It was likely she’d get swept up if she stepped foot into the Common, and if she was lucky, it would be by a good-natured stallion willing to give her a home for the winter instead of just a baby in her belly. To Nadine, who loved the idea of passion and romance, it was worth the risk.

As it had when she first stepped out of the tranquil sea, the sun was setting in a vibrant display of pinks and oranges when Nadine’s feathered hooves danced into the Common. She had long since groomed the salt of her initial swim from her fur, which now reflected the peachy hue of the evening sky. She had observed this part of the Crossing and knew generally what to expect; she was confident she could handle anything the Common threw at her with grace. She halted in a patch of failing sunlight, basking in the warmth before the mild chill of an early autumn night took over. Hopefully, she would be noticed by then, and would have someone to keep her warm.
Nadine
