He could almost feel the other stallion's eyes on him before he even turned his head to look, flared nostrils tasting the air of Paradise as his brown gaze set on the silver bay stallion. Cain could see he was remembered as well, the instant distaste practically glowing in Rougaru's eyes as they set on him. His black lips twitched with a little humor, even as his stance remained calm, not wanting to scare the pretty mare. The scream that split the air was surprising, Cain's ears folding back at the harsh sound. When they stood on this part of the islands before with Leonid between them, Cain was the angry one and Rougaru, the smooth talker. It seemed the tables had turned. The silver bay charged toward them, spraying sand in all directions but Cain held his ground, the twitching skin of his shoulders the only betraying marker that the adrenaline was starting to pulse just under the surface.

A lone ear flicked to hear the single word that dripped from Rougaru's lips as he got closer. The stallion slid to a stop between them and that's when Cain's ears flattened to his scalp. He hated that the other stallion had encroached on her space without her permission. He made a move to charge but Rougaru was quick, spinning and launching his back hooves right at his face. Cain jerked back at the last minute, sand spraying in his eyes and he snorted in irritation as he stumbled back, shaking his head and blinking his eyes. He couldn't see Rougaru mark the mare but he heard the next word repeated from earlier and his lips curled back. Then he heard the stallion tell her Atlantis is calling and he bristled, his tail flicking at his flanks as he tossed his head with another harsh snort and stomped the sand. He thought back on when he'd first arrived to meet the mare, before the air was split by the rage of Rougaru. She was nervous at first when he approached, but then she'd asked if he'd been sent by Persephone. It had seemed funny to him, his lips twitching with amusement as his eyes twinkled and he'd shaken his head slowly before offering a smile.

"I'm afraid not, but I do know the mare of the Forest. We are acquaintances. Do you need to see her? I could escort you." He'd offered. She'd then told him she didn't want to be forced anywhere and had asked if he understood what she wanted, even daring to call him her guardian. The words had caught him off guard and Cain had blinked at her innocence. Finally he sighed before answering. "Fortunately, the sea touches almost every herd land on the islands so it shouldn't be hard to find a home that meets that criteria." Of course, the calm had all been broken at that moment when Rougaru arrived on the scene. Seeing the fear that crossed her pretty features put Cain on edge and the protector in him had stiffened, ready to shed some more blood in her name. It would all be worth it. She was worth it. He had almost expected her to run and he would have welcomed it. At least then he could have distracted Rougaru and helped her get away, but instead the mare showed bravery by raising her head defiantly and crying out that she was not his. She called him a name, Hades, and Cain couldn't help but think how it seemed to fit him in this instance.

As Cain had been trying to shake the burning sands from his eyes, Rougaru had lunged for her and Cain could hear the gutteral squeal from her lips which called him to action. Suddenly it didn't matter if he could see or not. Even blind, he would stand between her and Rougaru. He was just starting to see through the tears that streamed from his eyes as the mare shoved her shoulder toward the silver bay stallion. Cain's ears flattened more as Rougaru replied, telling her she would go to Atlantis alive or dead. His body practically vibrated with anger as he threw his head with a roar of rage and launched at the backside of Rougaru. Rearing up, he tried to come down on the other stallion's back, his snapping teeth aimed at Rougaru's withers or neck. He flailed his front hooves, trying to straddle his sides but also aiming to scratch and gash up what he can while he was there. "Leave her alone!" He screamed.

He found his admiration for the mare growing as she continued to berate Rougaru with her biting words. As the mare moved to leave, Cain aimed to either keep Rougaru under him if that's where he was or if he had missed, he would try to race around and cut off Rougaru's path to go after her. "Keep going! Find allies!" Cain yelled after the mare, hoping she would hear him and not blindly race into another stallion's waiting jaws.
