bring me back to life... Ruger

She knew that he would find her; she just didn't think that he would be covered in blood when he did. Her ears pricked first to the sound of galloping hooves and her body stiffened, unsure what or who would find her first on the borders. Her hindquarters coiled, ready to run or fight, her lips quivering in readiness even though her body trembled with fear of the unknown. She didn't have Ryder to protect this time but that was probably for the best. Even so, it stole some of her courage to only have to worry about herself this time. Even as the black and white stallion she knew and loved raced toward her from the shadow of the trees, she could smell the fresh blood through the mud that covered his body. Her eyes widened in alarm, but her heart still skipped a beat at the sight of him, her nostrils flaring to drink him in. His words fell on her stretched ears and she snorted harshly, her hooves planted firmly in place as she got ready to argue back with him.

She knew he was only trying to protect her, but couldn't he see that she came here for him? Yet the frantic energy in his call put adrenaline in her blood stream as she glanced around as if searching for evil horses coming after him. As he got closer, she could see the blood on his face and yet she felt no fear of him, only of someone getting between them and blocking her from touching him ever again. Her ears flattened back to her scalp, motion finally produced in her limbs when he said that they must go. He said "We," which meant he was coming with her and that was good enough for Evanescence. Even as his own ears pinned and he charged after her very much like that day he'd herded her from the Common, Evanescence had a defiant light in her eyes this time as she snorted again and spun aroun on her haunches, taking off to race just ahead of him away from the Lagoon.

She could sense his fear more readily now as he got closer to her flank and a single ear kept flicking back toward him the whole way, making sure he was still with her every stride. She didn't slow until they reached the silence of the Falls. She knew it might be better to keep going until they reached the Prairie, but she felt a little selfish and wanted some time with him alone before bringing him back to the rest of the herd. They would have more allies there if they needed it, but in the meantime, he still had one ally at his beck and call and she would do whatever it took to keep him with her. Once she slid to a stop, she spun back around to face him, her sides heaving from the run but fire in her eyes as she stepped toward him. "Ruger...." She knew she should ask him what happened, whose blood was on his face, but in the moment, she couldn't find the words or the care. All that mattered was that he was back with her. The separation had been more horrific than any crime he could have committed in her eyes.

She didn't stop until her chest was pressed against his, her nose burying into his tangled mane as she breathed him in. The sting of copper burnt her nostrils but she didn't care. Beneath the blood, it was still Ruger and that's all that mattered.
