Once again, he had failed them and he had only himself to blame. He hadn't meant to take so long on the Crossing but when that mare had cried out for her freedom, he couldn't help but feel the urge to do something, anything. He couldn't leave her to her fate, even if Rougaru's claim was set in stone. When all was said and done, he'd wandered down to the water to clean his own wounds and catch his breath before the swim back but before he knew it, night had fallen and he didn't want to chance swimming in the frigid waters as a storm was blowing in. Sure, he might survive it, but would he be at his best to defend his herd if it was called upon? His heart was already back in Salem but the stallion had sighed in defeat and walked under a batch of trees to shelter for the night. When morning came, the storm was still upon them, making the waves angry as they rolled onto the shore. Cain could only watch helplessly as he wondred what his herd was doing and if they'd noticed his absence yet.

The moment the storm was gone and the seas had calmed down, Cain launched himself into the water and swam back to Salem. But his heart plummeted when he stepped onto shore and caught the scent of a strange mare. From a distance, she looked young but determined, her stance bold and he knew she wouldn't just walk away from this. Resentment at himself forced the stallion's shoulders lower as he froze for a moment. Should he confront her and find out how he could make her leave in peace? Perhaps she would even settle for a place in his herd with power or something. He almost didn't want to challenge for fear of hurting her. He knew mares could be just as hardy as warriors but she looked so young, probably about Paisley's age. How could he beat up on a mare the same age of his daughter and still keep his integrity?

Snorting as he pawed the sand and thought about his options, the familiar voice of Harlequin rang out and drew his focus. Relief left his muzzle in an exhale as the draft stallion took one more glance at the other mare and then snorted, turning on his heels to gallop over the dunes to meet with the mare he called his Guardian. He knew he had let her down, let the whole herd down, and he would probably get some scolding but he would face it head-on. He deserved it and then some. When the black and white arabian came into view, he let out a nicker of greeting, his eyes alight with eagerness to see her even if she wasn't so happy to see him right now. He slowed to a walk and then stopped before her, his ears folding back a little in shame. "Harlequin..." He knew he could apologize, grovel, let her see the guilt in his eyes, but it wouldn't take back the fact that he wasn't here. So instead, he let his voice trail off on her name, his gaze expectant but patient as he put the ball in her court and let her have the mic.
