Live through this lie

Was I left behind?
Tell me, tell me I survived.

Her sharp laugh caused my ears to flick forward and back and my heavy head to rise higher over my withers. It was startling at first, but after a bit of a delay, my lips parted and I bellowed a low, gurgling laugh myself. I cocked my head to one side as I studied her small form. She seemed so young to be out here all by herself.

I flashed her another smile at her next line, bobbing my head once before it comes to rest lower. "That's only because I'm old." I offered gruffly.

I took note of her name and commit it to memory. "Well, it's nice to meet you Ivanna." I said. "And you're right. This is often where others come to find a home... So, what are you looking for in a home, then?"

My nostrils flared as I suck in a deep breath, the sides of my barrel rising and falling slowly. But before I could speak again, words leave Ivanna's mouth in a hurry. I blinked quickly as I tried to keep up with her. A pang of sympathy for her tugged at my chest. And again, I'm astounded that she is alone, and so young, and had been passed by so many more diligent recruiters before I lazily showed up. I released a long sigh and offer her yet another smile, a warmer one and less playful, this time.

"Well, lucky for you, I might be able to help." I said followed by a low nicker. "I'm sorry you've been out here for so long on your own."

"I live in a place called the Prairie. It's on an island nearby known as Luthien. Have you heard of it?" I asked. "My family and I live among the open land and its tall grasses there. There's a beach. And a creek. And our neighbors in the Forest and the Thicket are mighty nice, too."

"Would you want to come see for yourself?" I dangled, waiting to gauge her reaction. "No pressure, of course. If you don't like it, you can leave. But maybe a change of scenery would do you some good."
