Re(2): Parks' Stupid Joke - - -

And another word for BZ's talkers. The Census has required more than just tick marks for each person in the household since 1840. They've required the names and ages of each person in a household, as well as the relationship to the head of household. Like, wife, son, daughter, informal adoptees, hired hands, servants, brother, mother, etc. Get on FamilySearch or Ancestry and the actual census sheets filled out have all been photoed and digitized. Before 1840 the household was by name but all other persons were tick marks by gender, age group and whether they were free white or colored/slaves. Just no names. When names were finally required, often they were spelled like they sounded because most people couldn't write.

Look up your family and you'll find a lot about them. People took care of their oldsters or their households were right next door. And in 1917 and 1942, boys lied about their ages on draft records when compared to their digitized birth certificates so they could go to war at age 16.

I can't believe a couple knowledgeable talkers dont know stuff like that.
