He was pleasantly surprised to hear the resounding call of none other than his precious Harlequin for all the herd. He knew it must be important so he lifted his head from grazing and gave an answering call to let her know he was on his way before he took off at a ground-eating trot through the deep sand, heading over the dunes in her direction. The issue of no lead mare didn't seem to be solving itself and where he didn't think it was such a big deal, apparently it meant a lot more to the herd than he thought. It was like the mares were starting to hunger for someone to guide them, someone to lead them. He was so proud of the many ventures he and his herd had been through and still carried on strong, but he knew he could do better by them. He could always do better. Harlequin stepped up into her role as Guardian and had done well by him and the herd. He had noticed others stepping up as well and he couldn't be happier to see it.

The mares were growing and developing in strength and confidence. Melisma had burst out of her shell to challenge Galexia over her claim to the desert and Chimeras had risked social status to put in a claim for lead mare and get the others' vote on it. Though she had been turned down in the end, it still made Cain no less proud of her for being brave enough to voice her concerns. There was distance in the herd and though he wanted nothing more than for everyone to bond and unite, he knew it wouldn't happen overnight. Nasa moved off on her own to start a herd of her own in the harbor and he was proud of her as well. He wished her all the best and wanted to visit at some point to make sure she didn't need anything. He felt a kindship with the arabian mare for their shared hisotry with humans. The other islands horses would never understand the two legged's and what they were capable of, not like he and Nasa.

He hoped Cerosi wouldn't be too sad to lose her friend. He would understand if she wanted to join Nasa in the harbor, though he knew Akello would be sad to see her gone when he came back from Luthien. His son seemed fond of the gray mare. Berit had given him a son recently and he loved watching his newest addition grow in the golden sands of the desert. Enoch was beautiful and perfect. So was his other son, Ahimsa, the one he only got to see briefly before he left Luthien himself. The bitter sweet moment would stay in his memories forever, or at least until he got to see his other son again some day. He didn't blame Vihaan for staying with her family. If that's where she was needed, then he would let her go. It was the kindest thing to do, the best way to show her just how much cared. The tobiano stallion had finally told someone how he truly felt and it was like a giant weight lifting off his shoulders, but it also left a new weight in its place because he returned home without her.

Finally, the dainty paint mare came into view and Cain gave a gentle nicker of greeting. As he stopped before her, he reached out, offering his muzzle to exchange breaths first. It was his way of asking permission before he gently reached to nuzzle lightly at her soft neck. Breathing in her sweet scent, the stallion smiled. "Harlequin." He said her name in greeting as he dipped his head. Knowing she'd probably wait on the others to show before she said her piece, he looked around with a small sigh before looking back at her. "Has Twinge shown any interest in visiting the crossing yet? If she's anything as fiesty as her mother, I figured she'd be impatient to take to the water. I can ask Carbon or Vulcan to escort her if you like."
