Although Tyr’s intentions had always been the same and had now been accomplished, the giant stallion couldn’t help but feel the burn of guilt now that it had been done. Tricking her here, leading her around the Falls outside the safety of her stallion; none of that bothered Tyr. In truth, he almost wished she would resent him. But as Kvothe turned to him, head dropped and eyes full of tears of her own shame, it tightened an invisible hand around his heart. What had he done?

Her apology and quiet sob wretched at his heart, and slowly, Tyr eased forward so that it wasn’t only her warm breath touching his chest. The stallion met her touch, his ears still tilted back as his face held regret. But it was nothing like she claimed. “You are far from undesirable, Kvothe.” Tyr reassured quietly, his eyes meeting her tear filled gaze. “You are beautiful in every way, and I don’t want you to go. I was just afraid…. Afraid you would hate me now.” Tyr said, genuine truth slipping free from his lips now.

Slowly, as if he were approaching a startled deer, the stallion moved closer until he was able to drape his neck over her and tilt his head to hold her in a comforting embrace. Tyr knew he could drop the act and walk away now that he had finished what he started, but a new compelling feeling was grasping at the stallion’s thundering heart. He wanted to comfort her. He wanted to remain in her kind gaze. Perhaps selfish, but Tyr wanted someone to see him as the good guy rather than the beast he truly is and would be again once he was no longer in her presence.

“Will you at least tell me you forgive me?” he whispered, knowing she might argue since she had thought this to be her fault.
