Her Majesty’s Ambassador to the United States, Dame Karen Pierce, visited the U.S. Naval Academy, Tuesday, Nov. 10.
The ambassador’s visit comes nearly 66 years to the day after Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth of England visited the Naval Academy and reviewed a dress parade by the Brigade of Midshipmen, Nov. 8, 1954.
Dame Karen Pierce represents Her Majesty The Queen and the U.K. government in the U.S and is responsible for the direction and work of the Embassy and its Consulates, including political work, trade and investment, press and cultural relations, and visa and consular services. The British Ambassador was accompanied by a delegation from her Embassy of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, including Commodore Phil Nash, Naval Attaché, British Defence Staff.
"The United States and United Kingdom have long shared a special relationship. I am thrilled that we can continue to facilitate that relationship here in Annapolis through a number of engagements and exchange programs between our respective militaries,” said 63rd Superintendent Vice Adm. Sean Buck. “It is never too soon for our midshipmen to learn to work alongside an important partner and ally like the UK."
In a brief meeting with Buck, the group discussed USNA’s efforts during last year’s HMS Queen Elizabeth (R08) ship visit, training and innovation in the COVID-19 environment, and USNA’s new Center for Cyber Security Studies and its latest developments.
“It was a great honor to visit the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis today and to witness first-hand the close working relationship between our two navies. I was pleased I was able to express my personal thanks to the Naval Academy for hosting the British Aircraft carrier, HMS Queen Elizabeth, when she anchored in the bay last year,” said Her Majesty’s Ambassador to the United States, Dame Karen Pierce.
The group also toured the newly constructed Hopper Hall, the USNA museum, the crypt of John Paul Jones, and the USNA Chapel. While at the Chapel, Dame Karen Pierce laid a wreath to commemorate “Remembrance Day,” a memorial day observed in Commonwealth member states since the end of WWI to remember the members of their armed forces who have died in the line of duty.
“Seeing the first-class facilities available in the new cyber center was fascinating - the Naval Academy is clearly equipping its officers with cutting edge skills to meet future threats and challenges. I was also privileged to be invited to lay a wreath in the Academy chapel to commemorate the heroic sacrifices of both our UK and US armed forces personnel ahead of Remembrance Day and Veteran’s Day,” said Her Majesty’s Ambassador to the United States, Dame Karen Pierce.
As the undergraduate college of our country's naval service for 175 years, the Naval Academy prepares young men and women to become professional officers of competence, character, and compassion in the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. One of the Royal Navy’s warfare and ship navigation specialists is a permanent member of staff at the Academy.
