Even though he spoke the words from his very heart, it didn't get the desired reaction when he said them to the beautiful draft mare. It was like she didn't want him to tell her what she could achieve if she wanted to. That was the whole point, after all. To do what she wanted to do. If she didn't want to be in charge, she didn't have to. He wanted his mares to be happy and safe, above all. He loved watching them come into their full potential, whatever that may be. Harlequin was fierce and independent. It's what made her such a good guardian. She spoke her mind, no matter the consequences. Berit had a heart of gold and she was a brilliant mother. Her heart always had more room for love and he found that more desirable than she could ever know. Every mare in his herd was different and he wouldn't have it any other way.

Her next words threw him for a loop and his ears flicked back and forth uncertainly before he shook his head with a soft snort. "I believe everyone has their own opinion on what a lead mare must be capable of. I only believe in someone who wants the best for the herd, no matter what. As for fighting, do you really think I'd stand by and let someone else do the fighting for me?" He raised a brow, wondering how well she really knew him to even consider such a thing. He'd always stuck by being the sole protector of this herd. He didn't even want Scarecrow to fight for his herd. Cain had assured the older stallion that he would gladly defend his Second's herd as well as his own. The words reminded him of Vihaan's argument a bit and made him flinch but he sighed and continued through it.

Vihaan wanted to stand beside him and fight. It wasn't that he didn't want a mare fighting. It was the idea that he would stand idly by and watch. That wasn't the type of stallion he was. He was a fighter. He was a protector, a defender. He had taken that duty upon himself when he first claimed the desert and he stood by the belief that it was up to him and only him to do the fighting that needed to be done. He wouldn't give that role over to anyone, stallion or mare, because it belonged to him and he'd gladly take it. He knew there was one exception and wondered if that was what brought up that idea to her.

He smiled sheepishly as he spoke. "There has only been one time that I have failed to fight for my herd and I take sole blame for that. When the young mare, Galexia, claimed the desert, I knew I should have challenged....but I couldn't fight her. For one, she was pregnant. I couldn't forgive myself if something happened to the foal. And second, she was young, the same age as my first daughter, Paisley, who I've only seen once since she was a filly. Galexia reminded me too much of her and I couldn't bring myself to harm her. If her mate had stepped up, I would gladly have challenged him but I couldn't fight her. That's why Melisma stepped up to do it...cause I failed in that regard." He sighed, his eyes shameful but at the same time, he knew he didn't regret not challenging her. He grew to care about Galexia as a mentor and a father while she was here. He didn't think he would ever be able to harm her.

His ears pricked forward, listening as Berit went on to tell him how her former herd saw a lead mare, and what she would be able to give him in that position. He smiled warmly, his eyes lighting up because he knew she could deliver on everything she spoke of. He understood her concern about the challenges and nodded in agreement. "I would never want someone to put themselves or their children at risk. I would always put myself between them and danger. I always will." He assured her. His smile was back as she said she would be second to none otherwise. "I believe you." He murmured, but his brows furrowed. "Maybe you should make sure the other mares know these thoughts as well. They took from your words that you weren't interested in the position at all, not that it meant something different to you. I believe you would make a fine lead mare, Berit. You know it's not my decision to make, in the end. I made it this way to make it the most fair I possibly could, so everyone could be in agreement and there would be no resentment."

He hoped he hadn't disappointed her with his last words, just as he disappointed Vihaan by not appointing the role to her outright when she asked. His heart squeezed at the thought of Berit leaving him as well. He wasn't sure he could handle losing someone else he'd grown so fond of. Luckily she distracted him by laughing, saying the Commons was a good place to start. He smirked a little and nodded. "I think you're right. I just hope I can get to them in time." Failure had followed him like a shadow for so long. Watching the roan mare from before getting chased away after he tried to save her still echoed in his thoughts. He scowled as he thought back on it before shaking his head, trying to clear his head of such thoughts and stay in the moment with her. Letting out a breath, he rubbed his head against her sturdy neck. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to let my thoughts wander off, there."
