It was so quiet.
This far into the mainland, it’s so quiet. The roar of the sea is gone, and honestly, I’m glad. It gets to be almost as bad as a bee buzzing about your head; incessant, constant, unabating. Don’t get me wrong; the ocean is beautiful, but sometimes a girl just needs her peace and quiet.
I stop and flick my ears forward. Surely this island wasn’t so small that I’d found my way back to the shore already. I had been walking, slowly, for a while now. Just wandering without any real direction or purpose but I was almost positive I hadn’t circled back to the shore. But there it was: a faint, yet distinct, roar of water.
Curious, I continue forward, my pace a little faster now, and listen to the sound of the water grow louder over the crunching of leaves beneath my feet. This sounded different, I realized. It wasn’t as angry sounding as the ocean had been today. No. It was calmer, if rushing water could sound calm. And then, breaking from the trees, the source of the sound comes into view. It’s a waterfall. A rather large waterfall, cascading down into a pool that seemed to branch off to meet the sea.
Having found the source of the noise and satisfied my curiosity, I followed the stream from the waterfall’s pool until the rushing water had faded behind me. Now that I’d found quiet again, I stopped, lowering my head to drink from the stream. Blue eyes peered out from behind a black forelock in my reflection. Blue eyes… I lifted my head and sighed. Maybe I could look for Kendry… Having never left this island, it would be hard to even know where to begin to find my friend.
