Like last year, this year the Individual Jai Alai World Tour will be decided in Berriatua. The tournament starts on Saturday, and the matches will be played for three weeks in a row at the Mendibar fronton. The three days will begin at 6 p.m.
As in other sports tournaments, the tournament will be conducted with a protocol consisting of health and safety measures. They will compete in two quarterfinals on Saturday [December 19]. Antxon Alberdi from Berriatua will play against Alex Hormaetxea from Bermeo, and Jokin Arbe from Markina-Xemein will have to beat Aaron Gonzalez de Matauco from Vitoria-Gasteiz to reach the semi-finals. This week's winners will be Aimar (Aldazabal from) Berriatua and Beaskoetxea from Gernika in the semi-finals on December 26.
In the words of Mikel Plaza, head of the Berriatua Zesta School , the characteristics of the Mendibar fronton are suitable for head-to-head games, and the puntistas believe that they can give a good show.
Diego Beaskoetxea is the most famous by name and by his professional career. Aimar and Hormaetxea have been playing professionally for many years and are performing at a high level. Also, Antxon and Aaron, who are having the opportunity to play with professionals, are giving a good level: “I would say that Antxon is the player who has stood out the most at the amateur level in recent years. He has been a member of the Berriatu school since childhood. Antxon and Aaron are the ones people know the least. Arbe from Markina-Xemein is a fine pelota player who doesn't give anything away and has to win. Everyone can also give a very good level. I see that the tournament is wide enough. I don't see any clear favorites, and there could be one or the other surprise, ”explained Plaza.
In last year's final, Aimar and Lopez put on a great show, and this year they hope to do the same: “Last year the tournament went very well; especially the final was very good, and this year we also hope for that. Head-to-head is often not easy to get out of a good match, and we were lucky in last year’s final, it was very good. Aimar almost gave a surprise, but in the end, Lopez won. There was a great atmosphere. ”
This time it has to be done without the public, unfortunately they won't be able to see the stands full, but the final will be broadcast by Euskal Telebista .
The Mayor of Berriatua, Jon Arriola, emphasized the work of the Berriatua Zesta School: "He works hard all year round and organizes many matches and tournaments, and we will be by their side to help".
Thanks to the town council and the town's cesta school, Aitor Arabiurrutia, a member of the World Pelota Council, emphasized the importance of their participation. "Although we have restrictions due to the socio-sanitary situation, we have seen the need to move the tournament as far as possible. Even though some of the big stars aren’t here in the Americas, the best local pelota players will show up. Due to our current situation, the pelota players from the Northern Basque Country and France cannot come either ”.
The mayor of Berriatua recalled the close relationship between cesta and the municipality: “The sports star in Berriatua is the tip of the basket . He has given a lot to the town, and we at the town hall make every effort to give the cesta punta a go too. Although this year's situation is not the best for the citizens to enjoy with the tip of the basket, we are committed to helping them organize ”.
