Re(1): Suggestion for streamlining Jai Alai playoffs Posted on December 27, 2020 at 01:37:48 PM by Craig G
I think the guiding consideration behind the current system is to create fairness - ideally all participants would have an equal or fair chance - while still working with the limits of the rotation system.
Eg: in a 3 team playoff for place, we would like for each team to have a 1 in 3 chance to place. As things stand, if all have equal strength, it's 37.5% - 37.5% - 25%, which is at least close. And according to my calculations, if the first 2 teams are average, then the 3rd team would have to be stronger to the point of winning approx 58% of all points to have everyone at a 33.3% chance. That means that if your handicapping puts the 3rd team as hugely better that the first 2, you still have the probs in your favor in that playoff.
OTOH, with your system, the 3rd team is just immediately eliminated for place.
Naturally we have the same problem with 4, 5, 6, and 7 post playoffs, only worse since the guys at the end of the rotation will never take the court at all.
