Welcome to the RAAF Airman Aircrew Association Message Board. It is for all to use whether airman aircrew or not, however the majority of us who frequent this message board are former or current RAAF aircrew, associates or enthusiasts who want to be 'in the know'. We must be certain, however, that we do not disclose any information which may compromise the security of the ADF or its personnel and we also must be certain not to criticise or to pass judgment on others. 'THINK' before you post, or if you aren't sure, 'DON'T POST'. AAA PATRON POSITION
IP: 101.177.143.160

Sadly, Colin's funeral service was conducted yesterday. With this, it is now time to consider Colin's replacement as Patron for the Airman Aircrew Association (AAA).

A few names were put forward, and of these, there were three recommendations (votes) for Bob Heffernan (Loadmaster), and one for Rudi Mech (Crewman). I have been in contact with both Bob and Rudi. Rudi was gracious about his recommendation, however he explained that due to compelling private issues, he felt he could not give his attention to the role.

Notwithstanding, Bob did receive the majority of recommendations, and as such, he has the position and has accepted it. Thank you, Bob, and congratulations.

For those who do not know Bob, he is well-known and well-regarded and has been around the airman aircrew fraternity for some considerable time, first on the C-130A then the C-130H where he performed in both training and operational roles. He may well have DC-3 time as well.

In addition, in 1977, Bob was attached to 14 Squadron, Royal Malaysian Air Force (Tentera Udara Diraja Malaysia (TUDM)), to instruct on aerial delivery techniques and procedures. He also served at Air Movement Training and Development Unit as an instructor.

In reference to AAA, I want to emphasise that it is not a club, but merely a gathering of airman aircrew and associates by means of a website, a facebook group, message board, impromptu gatherings, and a bi-annual reunion.

Furthermore, the AAA is by name only as it is not an incorporated body, ie., is not registered with the Office of Fair Trading. This alleviates the requirement to have AAA accountable to the Office of Fair Trading, have a committee and hold meetings and the like. It seems to be working well. No fees, either. It is free.

Finally, there are no hard-and-fast rules or politics, and the most rewarding aspect is the friendship, camaraderie, and the willingness of members to assist and to do things when needed.

We are all getting on in life and I believe we need an organisation such as the Airman Aircrew Association and its members as a platform to lean on.

Lance.

Bob Heffernan
