you gotta get bruised before you get mad [charlton, ren quest]

Anaisa rested her elbows on her knees, letting her head hang loose in a moment of weakness and exhaustion. Things... weren't going according to plan. Essy and her had always been at odds, but his sudden radio silence seemed suspicious - usually, by now, he'd have been tracking her down to gloat about some half-assed success, some tiny thing he thought would prove him better than her. It was annoying, but it was predictable. As if that wasn't bad enough, Ghede and Marinette were missing too. Ghede she wasn't so worried about - even Essy was unlikely to get into any real trouble - but Nettie? She was too... soft, too weak. Pirate or no pirate, Nettie was naive and innocent, the perfect target for anyone looking to take advantage. And if Essy was involved? Ghede, at least, would look after her; though they were all sextuplets, Anai and Ghede were the most twin-like of the lot and almost always on the same page. They were so alike in some ways that they often butted heads, but Anai was at least fairly confident she could predict his actions.

Essy, on the other hand, would drag Nettie straight into trouble and probably leave her there. But even that was a better option than the idea that some, or all, had returned to Dracerdis' side. She assumed that's what had happened with her other two brothers, Shango and Loco, since she hadn't seen them during the battle or since; they'd probably been off-ship at the time and were now unaware of their father's betrayal. But she'd talked to Nettie, and Ghede had pieced together much of it, and that put them both in grave danger. She'd tried discussing the situation with Essy, but he'd left in a huff before she'd gotten very far - he firmly believed in their father's plan.

That was the thing, though. Anai no longer believed that Dracerdis had a plan. He was crafty like a fox, and had passed along a keen intelligence to his children, but he wasn't a god. Anaisa had felt the power of one not long ago, a brief taste of near-infinite power and understanding, and she knew Dracerdis was nowhere near the level. Maybe she'd given him too much credit, thinking he'd plotted to murder some or all of his children in the confusion of battle. Maybe he was just so crazy he'd blown it up for the sheer fun of it, or maybe he hadn't even thought about it at all.

She blew out a breath, rubbing her throbbing temples. Or maybe he really was that smart, smarter than her, smarter than Ghede. Maybe he knew something they didn't.

All she knew was that she had to survive, even if it meant she had to kill him to do it. Anaisa wasn't one to turn her back on a challenge. She was a fighter, would live and die as one.

Her circling thoughts ground to a halt, her head snapping up as something burned in her chest. Gunhild rose to her feet, satellite-like ears rotating furiously as their shared Divinity Sensing sent alarm bells ringing in her head. She got to her feet slowly, eyeing her surroundings cautiously. The magic told her when a god was near, but it wasn't something she could control or use to pinpoint a location. Her hand crept up the back of her jacket, grasping hold of the hilt of her ice knife. It wouldn't do her much good against a god, but the habit was a hard one to ignore.

Gunhild gave a low growl-yip, a warning that the god was about to appear.

Anaisa & Gunhild
there's something wild inside of me,
I'll sharpen my claws, you show your teeth
