He didn't know what would have been worse, if she'd never opened her eyes at all, or what played out after. By the time he reached her, Berit was down, but she looked peaceful, almost like she was asleep....until she wasn't. Panic started to creep in and her legs flailed on the ground as blood seeped from her ears and her nose. Dread settled like dead weight in Cain's chest, knowing it was bad. Her head didn't look right...his own panic started to set in. Would he have to set this right? Would he have to show her mercy and take her from this world? He felt like the Desert was spinning as he gasped to take a breath. Tears trickled down his cheeks as he shifted his weight, suddenly feeling like he was going to vomit.

But as her eyes opened like a miracle, he saw the blood in them and he knew without a doubt that she wasn't coming back from this. His beautiful, gentle Berit was going to die....but would it be peaceful? He hadn't expected her to wake up at all....and he certainly didn't expect her to talk to him like nothing was wrong. She looked at him as she always did, like he was her long lost savior, here to sweep her off her hooves and take her breath away. His heart ripped with no signs of stopping. What god had looked down on him and decided to punish him so fittingly? Did his past crimes continue to haunt him even now? Is this his karma for Everglow and Vihaan? Would he continue to lose every mare he ever grew fond of?

When she spoke, he inhaled sharply and turned his full attention on her, not wanting to take that from her, even now as she lay prone before him, every bit a talking corpse. She called to her son, telling him to come meet his father and Cain urged a trembling smile to his lips. "That's a good name for him. Sinai." He found himself responding, even as the salt of tears wet his lips. She continued to speak, introducing them before she asked about Enoch. When she tried to look around, he clenched his jaw, almost feeling the pain for her that she didn't seem to feel, thankfully. Somehow, her numbess to it only made it worse, though. He felt helpless...helpless and growing more panicked by the moment.

Even when she made a comment about not being able to move her legs, she shrugged it off and he knew something was off. Her brain wasn't fully functioning anymore. In a way, it should make him feel better, that she could laugh it off instead of panicking herself. But that feeling of dread was only growing heavier by the second. Would it end soon? Would she smile and close her eyes and tell him good bye? Or would she keep talking until something or someone ended it for her? God, he didn't want to do it. It would kill him to do it. But could he let her keep going like this? He knew that would be more cruel. His heart was hammering, his breathing shallow. What should he do? "It's okay. I'm sure he'll find me. He always does." He found himself assuring her, needing her to be at peace, at least in what he could give her.
