Re(3): Ranger Regiment

Hi Les

I quote from the press release....

"The Special Operations Brigade, known as the Ranger Regiment, will carry out missions traditionally taken on by the SAS and SBS.".....

"The force would be expected to range from 2,000 to 4,000 soldiers"

Both you and I and all who read this board  know full well that the members of the SAS and SBS are men of exceptional soldiering abilities. Let's just say that getting into such a unit is not particularly easy.

Not wishing to decry the professional  abilities of the 2,000 to 4,000 men from the four existing regiments that will make up the new Ranger Regiment, one has to ask where do they suddenly development the quite unique abilities required to take on the role and tasks traditionally the remit of the SAS or SBS???

1 Para was effectively taken out of its Air Assault role a number of years ago and renamed a Pathfinder Regiment specifically to support Special Forces both prior to, in the course of and after their " special operations" throughout the world. Since that time though it's my understanding that their role and name has again been changed. 2Para is a Regiment lacking real support from the MOD and is not the unit it was. Again it is my understanding that in the recent past their were strident calls for it to be effectively disbanded, restructured and removed as practically the last parachute assault unit. Parachuting into action is now regarded as very old tactics, expensive and unnecessary given for example helicopter bourne insertion techniques now being used. You ask who will go..starting with a P ..??
You don't need to be a genius to work that one out. It's all window dressing by the MOD in readiness for drastic cuts in all areas. Did you see the recent report regarding the major US exercise where a fairly small number of Royal Marines totally trounced a far superior (numericaly) force of US troops? All about new tactics.
As Bob Dylan said...times they are a changing...
Give me the sweet release of death.
