“Mother?!”

Finch sat up quickly, her breaths coming in pants and her eyes wild as she looked around. But instead of the harsh snowy rocks and her mother’s bleak striped face, the young girl was met with the nearly blinding sun and the soft sounds of the rolling waves upon the sandy beach. Finch had fallen asleep sprawled on her side beneath the shade of a few palms with the herd nearby. But what had started as a peaceful nap had quickly turned into a nightmare. The memories of her first stint of life were starting to fade and become hazy, but in her dreams, she could still remember that one image very clearly. It always left her heart racing, aching with longing she didn’t understand. It had been two seasons since she had seen either of her parents. Surely she should be over it by now?

Feathered legs finally stretch from their curled position beneath her to lift her growing frame from the ground. Giving her golden coat a good shake to rid the sand, she finally looked around to see the herd had moved on. Though they had not gone far, she could still hear them in the distance and scent them well enough, they had just disappeared among the foliage. It gave her time to wonder, if something happened, would they even see her suffer it?

Shaking the thoughts away, Finch knew they would do her no good. But instead of moving closer to the herd (maybe to try and sneak a bit of milk from a mare that would allow it), the filly looked out towards the waves. It had been a hard swim to get here, but with her legs getting stronger with each season that passed, she wondered if it would be just as difficult to leave? There was so much out there, she was certain, and wanted to see more of it. This place was so different than where she was born. What did the other places have to offer?

Mindful of the waves as she neared them, Finch lowered her white face towards the white froth left behind as the water receded. Giving a playful snort, she struck out a front hoof as the wave raced back up to her, feeling satisfied when the salty water splashed up against her chest. Continuing her vicious attack, Finch jumped forward, lashing out with both front legs now. The water soaked her legs and chest, sprinkling up along her neck and even a bit on her face. It caused her to squeal playfully and race back up onto the shore, giving a bouncing canter with her tail flagged and her nose raised towards the sky. But with no one there to play with her, to run across the beach and splash into the waves, Finch’s excitement quickly dissipated.

Head lowering and ears drooping out to the side, Finch slowly trekked back up towards the dense jungle where the herd was at.
