The Desert had grown quiet again but he wasn't complaining. Berit's death was a hard blow to him and he wouldn't be getting over it any time soon. He'd buried her near the caverns where they shared their best moments and went to visit her regularly, just like he still visited Geneva, Zena, and Zubeia's graves. He probably didn't make it to their graves as often as he used to, but somehow he was sure they'd understand. Geneva was ever the forgiving type, just like Berit. His heart broke at how the mares that got so close to him kept being taken from him so cruelly and suddenly. Berit reminded him so much of his first lead mare and now she was gone, too.

He tried to remind himself and how much he still had to be thankful for. Brave Melisma, sweet Chelle, spirited Harlequin, outgoing Chimeras, not to mention his ever growing family of sons and daughters. He would always cherish getting to be a father to each and every one of them. Two of the horses from Scarecrow's herd had decided to stay in the Desert as well. He looked forward to seeing what Aries and Taurus could bring to the herd. He even got to be with his son, Ahimsa, and watch him grow. He couldn't thank Vihaan enough for that chance.

Every blow to the lives of his herd was a great loss, but he knew he needed to be strong for them. He had to keep going. So he would. He would continue to protect them to the best of his abilities. What else was there? This was his purpose. He was sure of it. The Vanner stallion stood on the dune overlooking his herd below. He heaved a sigh of contentment as he watched them graze. Maybe some day, they wouldn't need him, but he couldn't picture a day in his future when he wouldn't need them.
