The mare walking beside him seemed lost in thought as they moved through the Desert. He wondered if she was regretting her decision to come with him. Would she turn and run to Solomon and the Cove the first chance she got? Would she be asking to leave soon? His chest tightened at the thought. While he knew they had a long way to go to strengthen their bond and get that connection of trust, the Vanner stallion wanted to think they got off to a well enough start. He was hoping one or more of his herd mares would find her soon and start building those friendship bonds that would really make her feel at home here. The last thing he wanted was for Chelle to get lonely.

He watched her pretty features curiously as he spoke of Harlequin, hoping she wouldn't just take the words as a reminder that she was an outsider looking in. That wasn't at all the point of telling her that. In fact, he wanted her to see how strongly he was dedicated to his herd and how he thought of each and every member, seeing them all as individuals with separate needs and fulfillments. He hoped that she'd want to be added to that list some day, to build that strong bond with him so he could speak of her with such fondness developed over a period of time learning and growing together. Her silence was slowly making him feel more nervous, like maybe he was saying all the wrong things and pushing her away instead of making her want to get closer.

She spoke of his sons and the stallion pricked his ears and smiled, dipping his head in confirmation. "Yes, I've built up a number of sons over the years. I have five sons that live in the Desert right now and one that's spending some time in the Lagoon. I also have five daughters, but only three are here in the Desert. The other two have grown up and moved on to find their place on the islands. I can't say they all have my blood in their veins, but I think of them all as mine, anyway. I defend them and cherish them just the same." He thought of Vulcan, his adopted son through Berit, who may as well be his since he raised him from a young colt, not even weaned from his mother at the time she came to the Desert to help care for Carbon. He also thought of Kara, the daughter of Cerosi and Ironclad. Though she didn't have his blood, she was born here and as long as Cerosi wanted to call the Desert home, he would treat her as well as his own flesh and blood. She would be raised and loved just the same.

He watched her again as he spoke, hoping she wasn't creating nightmares in her head of him forcing himself on any of his mares to create such a number of offspring. He counted himself lucky to get the chance to be a father any Fall that came around. He let the mares come to him, never seeking them out in hopes of a breeding. That wasn't his way, at least not anymore. He hoped she wouldn't think he would expect her to give him sons and daughters as well just for calling this place home. Maybe if she got to meet Chimeras, she would know that's not the case. The outgoing pale mare had been with him for years now and had never sought him out for a child, or any stallion that he knew of. He enjoyed her company as much as anyone else and the Desert was her home. Cerosi had turned to another herd stallion two seasons ago and he never blamed her for it. She wanted to stay here and raise her daughter and he accepted it, never wanting her to feel badly for choosing someone else as the father.

When they reached the cavern, she turned to thank him and he dipped his head. "Of course. I can only hope that some day you see it as your home, as well." He tried to make his voice gentle, not wanting her to feel pressured or pushed in any way. When she asked for sleep, he smiled. "Okay. Take your time. If you need anything, I'm never far away." He assured her, sighing softly as she brushed her muzzle against his own. Her last words made his eyes twinkle with wonder. "And you as well, Chelle. You deserve the moon and stars." He whispered even as she turned to find her way back. He watched as her silhouette disappeared over the sand dunes, hoping that he would see it again in the near future.
