Hey everyone, it’s discussion time again! We have a few points to talk about listed below which originated from suggestions and previous topics of discussion that came up throughout the past few months. We would really appreciate as many people’s thoughts on these ideas as possible so that we can get an idea of what everybody wants and come up with the best improvements possible for the game.

Governments
At our last discussion a lot of players expressed that they liked the idea of island governments in principle, but they felt like they were under-utilised and that there was little incentive to use them more. One idea put forward was for each kind of government having a bonus/negative to being used on an island, giving characters incentive to pick one and to get involved in trying to change the government of their island if that bonus/negative doesn’t suit their personal motive. We like the concept of this idea, but would like to ask you all if you agree and, if you do, do you have some suggestions as to what these bonuses/negatives for the different types of governments could be?

Allies in Dice-Roll Battles
We also had a suggestion to allow the use of ally assistance in dice-roll battles like we do in RP battles; in other words, having another horse step in to take your character's place in battle. While we like the idea of this in principle, we did have some concerns that this would make dice-roll battles even easier if a character was always able to call a highly ranked ally, particularly since this would not require the time commitment of writing a battle post. One suggestion we had was to make this a perk that players could win in contests, so that this power would only be used occasionally, and be more of a handy ace-up-the-sleeve for lower-ranked characters while they become more established. What do you think of the idea of allowing allies to participate in dice-roll battles in general, and what do you think of the suggestion of them being offered as a perk as a balanced compromise between allies been freely allowed and not allowed at all?

Chance Board
Another suggestion we had was that of a chance board where non-combat based random outcomes could be rolled for different events should players want to leave things to chance. This idea sounded intriguing to us, although we are a little unclear on the details of what this might or could cover and how it would work. What do you think of something like this being introduced to the game? If you like the idea, what do you think it should cover and how would you suggest is should work?

Steals
Over time a lot of players have mentioned that they miss the steal board. While we also have fond memories of steals, we do have some concerns regarding the reasons they were originally removed, the main one being the large amount of subjectivity involved in writing and judging steals which would quite often lead to player disagreements or upset. Are you interested in seeing steals reintroduced, or would you prefer to stick to battles and in-character raids only? If you are interested, how would you improve on the old, subjective system? (For those who weren't around then, steals simply involved anonymously posting short riddles which had to allude to the horse being stolen, their home, and their herd leader. Herd leaders then had to guess who the riddle alluded to and had to block the horse they thought was being stolen from them. The steal's meaning would then be revealed and if it was not blocked correctly a moderator would need to decide if it was valid or too vague/difficult to decipher. It was, effectively, an out-of-character raid system. Ultimately steals fell out of use because it was very difficult to successfully pull one off, but many players have expressed their nostalgia for them over the years, which is why we would like to explore a potential new system if possible.)

Duplicate Names
Since TLI has been going strong since 2009, we have an awfully huge catalogue of characters, active, inactive and dead, even not including the many that are missing from the members page we now have. On occasion we have discussed the possibility of allowing people to reuse names that are already technically “in use” in order to free up more options for players, especially when it comes to names of characters long-since deceased or inactive that are never coming back. We have never allowed the re-use of names of characters with lineage on TLI to prevent family trees becoming indecipherable, however we have come up with the idea that we could potentially list duplicate names on the members page with numbers, such as Name2, to differentiate between them if necessary. We would like to get your opinion on whether this is an option people are interested in at all, and if you are interested what sort of restrictions should be in place? For example, should all names be free to reuse, only those of dead characters, only those of no longer active players, or those of active players but only with permission?
