He was deeply enjoying the bonding time he was getting with Cerosi as the seasons came and went. She was reaching out more, seeking out his companionship, and it made his chest tighten with happiness to know he was gaining her trust. She was starting to come out of her shell and mingle more with the herd, not that Kara gave her much choice. That filly was something else to watch as she raced across the dunes. Cain could care less that she wasn’t his. She was every bit a part of his family and herd as anyone else and he would lay down his life in a second for her wellbeing just like any of his children.
When Cerosi sought him out that night, he was content to stand at her side and let her curl up around him as he used his body to protect and comfort her. He could tell the time was getting close and he didn’t mind being there for her in whatever way she needed. When dawn came, he felt Cerosi stirring and knew it would not be long now. When she pulled away from him, he couldn’t help the concern that flashed in his eyes for a second but he knew that sometimes, the mare needed to do this part alone.
She didn’t move far, lying down beneath a tree and he held his ground, standing watch. His legs trembled, fighting the urge to go to her as she groaned and pushed. He kept whispering to her, telling her how good she was doing, telling her she wasn’t alone and that she could do this. When the black filly finally slid from her, the Vanner stallion breathed out a sigh of relief. He made a small move toward her as she went to stand, concern in his eyes as her legs trembled. He knew she must be tired and wanted to offer his shoulder for her to lean on. When she invited him over, the stallion smiled and moved closer.
