Ruieze Fields

Open fields and soft grass...
Ruieze stretches far in the midlands of Moladion, laced with streams that feed into Diveen and out of Asteraia at times. The fields are vast, filled with wildflowers and tall, soft grass; trees are sparse, as are rocks, but one can find small shrubs to hide amongst, and the grass itself. To the south of the fields, a Ruieze River widens, and the ground becomes sandy. There is a small, grassy island that can be reached from the banks, with water-birds often congregating on the island rather than the riverbanks.

Auri watches with utter fascination as Apophis rises to his full height. He’s giving her a dressing down, but she’s tolerating his chastising because she wants to listen to his magnetic voice. Are you going to let him speak to you like that? She could almost hear her older brother in her right ear, but all she can do is tilt her head to one side, blink and smile sweetly up at the dark stranger. After all, everything he was saying was the truth, and he wasn’t being unkind. Perhaps he was being a little short, but she had just run into him, she kind of deserved it. Although, she is slightly amused that he had clearly underestimated her. Auri could hurt other wolves if she wanted to, though she usually surmised that such actions were a futile waste of her precious time and energy.

He mentioned food and her stomach almost rumbled in response. Her little face practically lit up like a firework to his invitation. “That sounds great. Mind if I join you?” She asks while springing into an easy lop behind him. She had almost forgotten about the mud covering her face and torso until she felt his jaws clamp into the back of her scruff. “Wa-,” Auri barely had time to breath let alone fully comprehend what was happening to her. Like a rabbit she freezes up, lithe limbs go limp as he practically lifts her from her beloved mother earth. What is he going to do to me? Her mauve eyes are wide with panic as he drags her towards the river. No, no, no!

Auri’s face is plunged into the water and for a few tense seconds she closes her eyes and holds her breath. Her heartbeat slows and she hears the current filling her ears. The sides of her vision start to blur and very quickly she can hear them. The chanting. Those words that still haunt her in her worst nightmares. The voices, the voices that are baying for blood. It’s the cries and jeers of her old pack. Twice a year they would all travel down to the river where the injured, terminally ill and elderly were forced into the rapids. It was their kingdom laws, and it was considered to be a kind and merciful death.

Being born a runt, Auri’s name had come up on seven occasions. Everytime she had been saved from the wild waters by her father, her mother, an older sibling or a relative. In the saddest cases, she was saved by another packmate volunteering to take the ride down the river in her place. She had prayed that when she became an adult, that she would prove to them all that she was worthy of her life.

No, they still called for her death. That year, it was her beautiful mother that sacrificed herself to save her daughter. “Mother!” Auri screams out into the water, spraying bubbles into the stream. She remembers that dark day like it was yesterday. Running along that riverbed, watching her mothers white body bob and weave amongst the boulders. Auri had hauled her mothers broken and lifeless corpse out of the riverbed by herself. It was against their customs to do so, once the river had taken you, your body belonged to the water.

To hell with your rules! Auri had spent one last night sleeping beside her mother before laying her to rest amongst the bracken and briars. And that’s the night she ran away and never looked back. Her father was a king, but what’s the point in being a leader when you couldn’t change what was wrong and cruel in this world?

Now with a clean face she stares directly up into Apophis orange eyes like a siren. There is a haze there as she speaks, almost in a trance-like state. “You can break my body but you’ll never take my soul!” She hisses at him before striking out like a snake. She latches her teeth into his neck area, hard enough to get purchase but not enough to break his skin. In one eerily smooth motion she curls her hind legs together and kicks out at his stomach and underbelly. Using her blunt nails, she claws and tiptoes her way around his larger frame. Eventually, she ends up straddled over his back. Her hind legs are split in an unladylike fashion around his hips. One of her front limbs is pinned awkwardly between her neck and his while the other is draped over his other shoulder.

For a few moments she pants. Her teeth still gently wrapped in the fur behind his head. The mist clears from her mind as she inhales his scent. Gently she releases her grip and stares at the horizon between his ears. “Do you still want to grab some food?” She whispers into one of his ears as if nothing very weird had just happened.

he will go down, he will drown, drown, deeper down,
the mills grind slow in a riverbed ghost town
