Calls Me Home

~~ I'm coming home to breathe again,
to start again..

How many seasons have passed since she’d last seen him?

She is soundless in the way she moves as long legs carry her across the sands, to the place he’d mentioned they’d go but then she had lost him in the surf and eventually after the days went on she almost lost hope. Another body dances with her own, many shades darker than herself but the girl was hers; her own to love and cherish in the hopes her father would return. They moved as one, soundless laughter passed between them as they took on a game of chase, Costello tucking her head close to her chest as she threw herself forward to get ahead of her daughter, who called out her frustrations and tried to grab her mother’s flagged tail. Neither of them was willing to give the other the upper hand but it was all for the sake of fun.

“Mama,” Ceyda called to the older mare, who was busy climbing up the rising dune in front of them, her voice a warning to the bay that she was pushing herself too much as her darker companion had slowed to climb up her own way. Costello shakes her head, looking down at her child with amusement glimmering in her eyes, and if she could speak she’d surely tell her how silly Ceyda was for worrying.

The smell of salt in the air announces their arrival to the beach side, where Ceyda had wished to go since their aimless wandering had been nothing but endless amounts of sand. She is breathless by the time she joins her mother, who’d gone eerily still at the sight of the other horses making their way in their direction, her once joyous expression slipping into that of someone who’d just seen a ghost. Ceyda’s dark eyes turn to watch.

Costello was caught off guard, and while her mind tried to come up with the more logical notion that the stallion just ahead merely looked like her lost companion she knew it in her soul that he’d truly come back to them and he was very much real and not a simple mirage that had plagued her doing the early moments of their daughter’s life.

Her descent to them is about as graceful as a newborn foal learning their legs, but her excitement is hard to ignore when he was close enough to touch, yet as her hurried hooves ache to close the distance they suddenly pull herself short as another thought enters her mind; would he remember her? One again she is the vulnerable mare he’d met all those seasons ago, her heart open and eager but scared to let herself get too close. So she stands back as her daughter takes charge, the black mare charging forward with a grin. “Hello there,” her daughter chimes to the stallion and mare, standing close to her mother but keeping herself just enough in the way to give Costello time to mentally recover. She knows how much her mother wished to speak, almost forcing the words to come out through her damaged vocal cords.

Looking at both Bahadir and Ceyda, it would be obvious as to whose child she truly was, for her belly was marked in the same white as his own, and the tip of her nose had a little white streak that Costello had loved to kiss when she was small. It pains Costello that she had lacked the ability to tell her girl of her father, and even now when he’s right in front of her she lacks the proper way to do so.
