Hi! More than happy to help you out.

TLI exists in a world based on the real world, i.e. one where magic does not exist, so we would prefer that players do not write canon magic or fantasy elements into their backstories. However, you're more than welcome to have your character believe that these things are real. For example, perhaps they follow a religion with beliefs in the fantasy or supernatural, or they suffer from hallucinations. You are welcome to get as creative with it as you like, provided it is based on something that could occur in reality.

You could, if you wanted to, say that your character was born on the islands, but for the sake of clarity their lineage will still be listed as Unknown x Unknown on the Members page, to denote that their parents were not played on TLI. Most players opt for saying their characters are new to the isles, as it's easier to explain their lack of connections that way.

Claiming characters, as long as it is a valid attempt (i.e. not breaking any rules), is always successful. It functions mainly as an OOC signifier to other players that says "this character is now under my protection; if you want them you'll have to go through me". It essentially means that the character now belongs to a herd, whether they are willing or not, and are eligible for being raided or challenged for. IC, the claiming character may go about claiming in whatever way they choose, whether through discussion or physical force. Some character may choose not to claim at all, which is equally valid. Equally, the character being claimed, while technically the claimer's "property", does not need to submit quietly.

You are welcome to roleplay the outcome of a dice roll battle on any board that permits it. If you would like your battle to be judged as a roleplay battle, however, we ask that this be posted on the battle board, since we have strict formatting rules for roleplay battles to adhere to (and so that we can easily track them).

I hope that helps! Let us know if you have any other questions <3
