He could tell the other stallion was wary, but that wasn't unexpected. It was always a test of some kind when you had two mature stallions that weren't related in an encounter, especially with his herd right over the dunes behind him. He didn't feel threatened by the stallion so for now, all was well. He was hopeful when the other stallion dipped his head as well politely. He had manners, anyway. A good sign. Once he introduced himself, the gray stallion seemed to relax a little. He apologized for intruding and Cain smiled. Yes, he definitely had manners. For a moment, the stallion seemed thoughtful, as if trying to figure out how he wanted to word his motive. Cain waited patiently, ears pricked toward the other.

Finally, the stallion gave his name as Romulus and confirmed his suspicions that he did once live in the Lagoon. He said he didn't want to go back though, and Cain's ears twitched. He was intrigued, for sure. Was something going on at the Lagoon? Hopefully nothing bad. His son was still there, after all. Romulus told him he had a companion and Cain's brows furrowed more in understanding. He had someone else to think about, a friend or possibly more. Of course he would want to get them away from the Lagoon and somewhere safer. He asked if Cain had room for a Second and the Desert stallion dipped his head in answer. "A pleasure to meet you, Romulus. I have had my dealings with the Lagoon and I can't say they've been good. If you are willing to help protect this herd, then I would be honored to have you fill the spot of Second. Your companion would be welcome, as well. In fact, I have always allowed my Second to have their own herd members, if that's what they wish. As long as you help protect my family if needed, then your herd would have my protection as well. What do you say?"

He let the stallion think about it, if he needed to. Cain knew he had sons and Aries who had already approached him about the Second position, but since they weren't very active in the herd, the role was still unoccupied, which only left the Desert weakened, in his opinion. If he could fill that spot now with a mature, level headed stallion, then the Desert would only be stronger for it. He might hurt some feelings in the meantime, but his herd needed to come first before pride.
