Barn Swallow Nest

When we first came to our Muskoka cottage in 1980, Tree Swallows nested in several boxes along the shore, Purple Martins moved into a house we erected (once I tallied 18 about the box) and Barn Swallows were common. With several cold snaps in the 1980’s, swallows sustained mass mortality and no longer graced our landscape. I had not seen a Barn Swallow here for decades. So I was delighted yesterday to be briefly shown (=no pic) a Barn Swallow nest with two almost-fledged young and attending adult in a boathouse just down the lake. The date and location are interesting. Late egg date for Ontario BASW is August 21, this is pushing that. The nest was on a pillar below eye level, the adults dependent on the door being kept open.
