You say, “Afghanistan was never a nation state; it was an area of feudal tribes.” I saw a documentary on YouTube or PBS recently that showed, all the US was ever fighting in Afghanistan was feudal tribes that still live an almost-prehistoric life in caves. If other nations had not supplied them with modern weapons, those feudal tribes would still be fighting each other with clubs.
The documentary I saw showed that after the US leaves, those feudal tribes will revert to their tribal warfare, with possible intervention (and funding) from Middle Eastern countries (Iran, Iraq, Palestine) and China.
If the US could have kept troops in Kabul, it would have made it easier for us to keep tabs on the next Bin Laden, scheming to blow up the next World Trade Center. As it is, President Biden has helped the Taliban kill what ever friends/info sources we still would have had in Afghanistan. Now, we’ll have to rely on drones for all of our information.
