Spring had arrived early this year, bringing on a splendor that Vera finds enchanting. The snow was melting away, giving space for the young grass to come up. It was green. Things were green again. If nothing else, the mare could be grateful for that. Spring always came on with a certain sense of relief, one that she didn’t even know how to put words to. It didn’t matter. The soft, short mare is grateful.

Departing the mainland in the winter was far too dangerous. No, she had hung around just long enough for everything to thaw. The thaw was important, ice would have been an incredible danger for her in the open sea. Things were okay now that it was spring. She was safe now that it was spring. Safety was something the mare would never take for granted again… not after this winter. What would keep her safe from the heartbreak that was living inside her chest?

As the mare pulled herself from the sea, she was grateful. The Crossing hadn’t been too hard to find. A straight shot from the home she was leaving to her new life-- sounded simple enough, but was it? Likely not. Vera isn’t quite strong enough to chase the sadness from her head as she shook as much saltwater as she could from her coat. The winter fluff hadn’t shed out yet, and she feels a little silly about it. With a sigh, she turned her back on the ocean.

Quietly, Vera surveyed the Common. It was drab, sure, but the mare easily supposed that this wasn’t all of it. To the west, the sun was beginning to set. If nothing else, it would put on a spectacular show. If nothing else, Vera had that.
