i never promised you a rose garden

Just as she anticipated, it didn’t take long for a horse to approach her. Apolline forced herself to stay still, though the fear that she felt was begging for her to turn and bolt. She even shivered a little as he drew close, her honey-amber eyes stuck on him. It was so hard to convince her legs not to pick up and take her back to the ocean she’d crossed the night before, but she did it anyways. Apolline stayed as still as she could manage as he approach, her eyes jumping with worry all across his face to look for any ill intent.

It wasn’t there. He was as kind and gentle as she could have hoped to find, but Apolline’s worry wouldn’t let her stop worrying.

He welcomed her to the isles, named himself Björn, informed her he was a king, and then told her this place she was in was unsafe. Apolline’s eyes widened and she looked away from him only to glance about in a darting sort of way, as though she expected there to be monsters at every side of them coming from the forests. However, it was still calm as it was before he’d come to her.

“But fortunate for you, I have come to offer you safe haven.”

She opened her mouth, wanting to say something, it found her anxiety felt as though it had swollen her tongue and no sound came out. She closed her mouth and swallowed, dark red tail flicking at her hind, then tried again. “Safe haven?” Her voice was so quiet, so fitting for such a terrified little thing. It trembled the same way she had just moments before. “W-why me?”

Why was he going to promise her safety?

Should she tell him? Warn him not to give anything to her? Make sure he knew she was nothing more than a curse? Death follows you, Apolline. Get out! Her throat tightened with emotion. She knew it wasn’t fair not to warn him, but her loneliness and her instinctual need for others made it so she couldn’t. She pushed away at the guilt that turned over in her stomach and kept her eyes stuck on his.

They were such a nice blue…
