The rage in her voice stung him somewhere deep, somewhere soft that was easily broken. The tears in his eyes couldn�t be blinked away, not when his heart wrenched like that, and he felt them slip slow down his pale cheek. He firmly stomped a front hoof on the beach, gritting his teeth before he threw his head in frustration.

�I�m not leaving you in this condition.� He protested, firm. Almost angrily, with his ears flicking back. How could he leave her? How could he live with himself if he walked away from her with the injuries she�d suffered? It was only autumn and the predators weren�t yet desperate, sure, but just last year there�d been a rabid coyote in the Falls. Zevulun remembered the chill that hit his gut when his aunt told him of fighting it off with other island natives. Who knew what would come across her? What predator - of the carnivorous kind or the equine one?

�Please,� he forced himself to soften his voice. To calm the temper fed from his fear. �I can�t in good conscience leave you like this. At least let me take you to my aunt in the Peak, you�ll be safe and can recover there under the protection of the mares who live there.� He didn�t want to do that. Zevulun didn�t want to leave her there and walk away, even knowing his aunt would let absolutely no harm befall her.

His heart was pounding too fast and too hard in his rib cage. His eyes locked onto hers, desperate. How could he make her see? He knew she was scared, he could feel the fear that radiated off her, and he was scared for her. Who had done this? What had happened to her? How did she not know who she was? Who he was?

�It�s too dangerous for me to leave you here alone.�
