the ace in exile

Socially, he doesn’t always do the best. For that, Viđarr offers his sincere apology. It can be hard to socialize when you don’t understand all of the language, all of the social norms and graces that come with a culture. His people were… they were different. A different sort, who don’t do well with extreme displays of emotion. With really any displays of emotion, at least of the positive sort. Sure, they have hearts that beat hot and thick in their chests, but you could usually only tell when things were going wrong. Even from his people, Viđarr is different. The shadow has a hard time fitting in.

Hearing the sound of his name from her lips, the shadow of a man allowed a smile to play on his face. It was… different. His mother tongue could be unfriendly, especially to those that had no way of knowing. Filled with rolling r sounds and false js that didn’t sound as they were maybe meant to… an unfriendly tongue to strangers, but oh how he missed it. Hearing his name fall from someone else’s lips is enough to leave Viđarr’s hear thrumming in his chest. Still, the smile reaches his eyes, and he’s relaxed beside the painted mare.

So, you want me to go swimming again? Helvete, she was right. Bringing her back into the sea after having just arrived… there was no telling how long she’d been travelling. Viđarr’s ears flickered sheepishly for a moment. Maybe his request was unreasonable, that was true. “Forgive me,” the words were soft. “We can rest here for as long as you need.” He wouldn’t have been surprised if she drove him off, as was her right. How could he be inconsiderate?

Please, lead the way, but he waited– they could rest, if she needed. Viđarr watched as she moved to shake some of the frost that had caught in her mane. Without thinking, he reached gently to free a frozen tangle. It was a gesture that he’d made dozens of times for his sisters, a passing tenderness. The shadow surprised himself, though, touching Evalyn as he did. She was nearly a stranger, and such a boldness was… well, it was uncommon to say the least. Maybe Viđarr was more flustered by his previous misstep than he realized.
