I had heard of the Whig Party, but couldn’t remember who or what they were. I also didn’t recall whether or not we had ever had a Whig president.
Per a quick computer search, the Whigs favored an activist economic program, which called for protective tariffs, federal subsidies for construction of infrastructure and support for a national bank.
Whigs elected two presidents: William Henry Harrison and Zachary Taylor. Two more Whig presidents, John Tyler and Millard Fillmore, gained office as Vice Presidents next in the line of succession.
