I figure I'd be gone before 70 like my grandparents, but so many now live til 90, I'm just not sure that last ten years is actually living, or just prolonging death.
I'm a bit surprised Dr Kevorkian wasn't able to open up a franchise of walk in funeral homes for those of us who've had enough of this old age shit. My dad was so pissed he went to jail, so I had to make decisions to let dad go when he wanted to. Clearly religion has far more influence on our justice system than we should allow. It would seem to me that the judicial system prolonging life against the will of the oldsters should be unconstitutional.
Isn't it strange? When someone wants to check out, govt won't let them...based on conventional religious morality about delaying end of life as long as possible. When I was young, there WERE no triple bypass surgeries or transplants like that.
And isn't it weird that Christians who pretend to believe in a heavenly hereafter will delay their reward with their last dollar! My dad said he'd rather spend his last money on the educations of his grandchildren.
Actually he couldn't because at $3000 a month for nursing home care, it wasn't long before Medicaid was paying that bill, as it does for most people. Dad hated that place.
Sadly journalists won't even touch end of life issues; theyd rather just talk night after night about murders and warm and fuzzy feature stories.
We don't really start getting good at helping our parents into the ground until we've done it four times. And by then, we're out of parents to help. The rest of you will be blindsided because no one will tell you what you face with them, and you're too afraid to bring it up with your parents to find out what THEY want done while they're still lucid enough to tell you.
Ya think car dealers are a ripoff, somebody should look into the eldercare and funeral home industries! Replies:
