surrounded by darkness yet enfolded in light

The pitiful look that the mare gave him was enough to twist his heart, nearly breaking it into pieces for her. Everything in Bacardi wanted to press himself against her, to warm her and protect her from whatever evils she believed to follow her. But they were utter strangers, and even if his instinct tried to demand it of him, he refrained. At least for now, until he was sure that it would be wanted.

Bacardi listened to her tale, his ears perking some at the familiar name that followed the ending. Bjorn was not a new name among the islands, though he was surprised to hear of his disappearance. It seemed the kings that roamed the Isles often took their leave, only to return when the burdens of their crowns didn’t seem overwhelmingly heavy. Did that mean that one day his own sire would return? Bacardi didn’t know if he was hopeful for Ruger’s return just so that he could meet his father, or if he was grateful the lagoon born man was no longer around.

“I’m not sure what I did to be cursed.” Bacardi replied quietly, hoping to distract the mare from any further sobbing as she claimed to not want him to make the same mistake. “Perhaps because I was born to a Peak mare and a Lagoon stallion. I was a year old when my mother died, and since then, it feels like the loss hasn’t stopped.” he confessed. Although he didn’t want to lay his burdens on her, which is why he didn’t go into further detail, she had been the one to ask.

“I never met King Bjorn, but I did live in the Bay while he ruled the Inlet. Things have…. Changed. In both territories. I’ve moved to the Thicket, on Luthien, to try and start over. To try and accomplish… something.” though Bacardi wasn’t really sure what he was trying to accomplish. “You could start over there too, if you want?”
