The water that had seemingly swallowed Scarlet whole was cold. Cold, but not altogether… not the worst thing? At least the sting left her feeling alive. Alive… how strange. How strange was it to feel alive as she did? Saltwater in her eyes, in her mouth, stinging any raw bits on her hips and especially her knees. All of it had been raw and stinging where the flesh was open, but that too, was another reminder that she was still here. The steady throb of her heart in her chest, and forward. There was no going back, and there was no stopping.

Right. No going back. No stopping. No stopping, that was, until she reached land. Until she reached land and sank to her knees on the pebbly sands. It was dusk now, and it was clear that Scarlet wasn’t out of the woods yet. Still… heck, she was tired. Heck. This was a tired that the mare had never experienced before. A tired that ate into her bones and sank deep beneath the surface of her skin. She’s exhausted.

But the mare stumbles to her feet. Scarlet needed to go on, at least for now. She needed to move inland, and she needed to find somewhere out of the wind to rest for the night. Everything else could wait, but she couldn’t make a swim like that one only to succumb to the cold. Though exhaustion weighed heavily on her bones, Scarlet plodded inland.
