the ace in exile

At least his note on the cold is well received. Viđarr’s dark ears pitched forward, studying the girl with interest. Not unfamiliar, but not familiar either. Something of the inbetween, another one of the ghosts. The Savanna was haunted, and Viđarr had come to accept that. It was okay. He’d come to terms with all of the satellite residents there, as long as they didn’t cause any problems for his family. The land was under his protection, and so were those inside… within reason.

This is the first time that the shadow has been able to study her up close. “I can wait with you for a while, if you want.” The offer comes, though Viđarr doesn’t quite know the right words. He could pass the time with the woman, if she wanted him to. Then again, would he be denying the fates? Would he be pushing away those that would otherwise come here, to this woman? He hadn’t been shy in approaching Reef when she and Zevulun were speaking, but then, it occurs to Viđarr that he’s violated some sort of social contract in doing that too. Was he inept? Were other men as inept as he had been on that day? Who knew.

“Yes, I am. My name is Viđarr.” The words were soft. For as tall and as dense as the shadow is, he’s immensely soft spoken. “It seems the Savanna is full of ghosts, but I don’t mind. If you would like to stay, you do not have to go.” Another offer, one gently floated between them. “It can be as a member of my herd, or just because you see it as your home.” Companionship was quite the concept, after all. Companions… did he have any at all? More and more these days, it seemed his home was empty. Viđarr peered quietly, carefully out over the sea.
