HEROES GET REMEMBERED

Anath sizes up the brindle stallion, something in her eyes shining– equal parts wise and wild. Wise… who would have thought she’d make it that far? At the shallow, harsh endearment, the champagne mare allows a sneer to flicker across her face. She couldn’t help that, after all. Her posture is lazy, devil-may-care. The laugh that curses her chest, her throat, is harsh but not without humor. “I know more about the Badlands than you ever will, boy.” And it was true. Anath’s blood ran through the Salem, thick and hot. Hell, it was her blood and the blood of her father that had stained the sand red… she saw it in her dreams. In her nightmares.

There were other things for her to concern herself with, though. High-headed as ever. “Sanctimonious, that’s a first,” the tattered general can’t help but let that harsh, wheezing laugh kick up again. Old, but not dead yet. Not dead quite yet. There’s life in her, and she can’t help but shoot a glance at the other woman, one that says can you believe this fool? She will watch, and she will wait. A sentinel of sorts, or at least, she’s become one in her old age.

A boy joins them, and in her eyes, he’s little more than that. A child… green eyes narrow curiously. Anath thinks of Cynic, stowed away in the Peak, and wonders if the fate that befalls him is the same as the men before her. They were awfully… annoying. The idea that Anath had grown jaded in her old age was laughable. No, she’d always been jaded. That’s another story for another day, and she does her best to stay grounded in the moment. Still, a fog seems to settle over her head in moments like these. Ah, no matter.

“I wouldn’t bother proving anything to anyone, really. The ones who count see it, the ones who don’t, don’t.” She offers a high headed, rakish grin to the roan mare. Frankly, she’s pleased with herself.
