Romulus knew what the Common was for. Truly, he had no business stepping foot on these lawless grounds, but for some godforsaken reason, he was here anyway. Maybe he liked the chaos; maybe he
needed the chaos, after his first taste of order in his life had vanished into the sea. It was familiar enough to be comforting, but the odds of someone’s teeth connecting with his hide were good enough to keep him on his toes.
For the most part, though, Romulus really wasn’t interested in participating. It might be nice to get into a fight with someone or something, but he wasn’t chomping on the bit for that to happen without at least a
little foreplay. So he found himself a comfortable spot to lounge in the shade, and he watched the sparks fly for everyone else.
His attention drifted until movement in the corner of his eye pulled his icy blue gaze toward the confrontation of the two mares. This wasn’t sparks — this was a straight up wildfire. A midnight-colored mare who appeared to be cloaked in stars had lunged for the throat of a (slightly familiar?) mahogany roan, and even Romulus could tell from this distance that this was no play fight.
Without considering the consequences of his actions — there were really no thoughts in his head at this time except the image of Dexter throttling his mother — Romulus surged forward, out of his hiding place and into the open grounds of the Common. He slid to a halt, coming up on the star-spattered mare’s right side, and aimed a punishing nip at her shoulder. “Hey
knock it off,” he snapped, trying to get between the two, separate them — as he could never have separated his parents. “The hell is wrong with you?”
