The golden mare was not so compliant as some. Fell had not expected her to be, but still the pinch of her teeth on his cheek — the movement so quick he had not been able to wrench away in time — scraped at his self control, exposing some of his violence to the light. Fell’s ears pinned back, and he reached out to deliver another, more demanding bite, or maybe he’d just grab her by the mane and haul her bodily into the sea —

The shriek of the other mare startled Fell, and his head shot up, golden eyes finding the white-red blur that barreled toward him. He turned, ready to block her attack, but she did not rear to strike at him as he expected. Instead, she plowed right into him, sending the air bellowing from his lungs and sand spraying from his suddenly ungrounded hooves. She went straight for his throat, and the two of them fell heavily into the waves, Fell’s head being immediately thrust below the shallow water.

He choked, and coughed, and thrashed, and suddenly his hooves struck soft sand and he was up again. Seawater weighted down his mane and tail, and his eyes were blurry with brine. The damn woman’s teeth remained firmly clamped on his throat until the moment he had scrambled upward, and now the site of her attack was hot and torn. Blood ran down his neck to mix with the shallow waves, staining the sand red where they slid up the beach.

Never had he encountered such glorious, violent fury from anyone else. Never had he been so thorough taken aback by an attack. He was thrilled and enraged in equal measures, and as he found his footing once again, he pushed back against the bloodied red mare, throwing every fiber of his being into shoving her into the sand. The golden mare was forgotten; even as she joined in, even as her teeth left bloody welts on his inky black skin, she existed to him no longer.
