I have loved the stars too fondly,

Despite the cooling effect emerging from the ocean in late evening tended to have, the afternoon that day had been warm enough that residual heat still filled the air and clung to Sidereal's dark form, quickly drying out his fur. It had reached late summer, the time of year the sun and heat were at the height of their burning intensity: a last show of terrible glory before fall inevitably came and the weather cooled enough for pale dewdrops to form on blades of grass in the morning. With the evening so warm even after the sun had set, it was easy to guess that the heat during the day had been oppressive.

Sidereal ambled along the shore in no particular hurry as light faded from the sky and the soft glimmer of stars began to emerge. He only reached the Common's real meadows when clouds had veiled the stars once more. A pale mare, spotted with black, drifted along a short distance from a squabble involving a trio of horses. He tilted his head at the gathering, wondering what could possibly have driven three people to gather in the middle of the meadow, on the largest island he'd seen so far, in the middle of the night to snap at each other.

It was interesting, if nothing else, and Sidereal wondered whether the stallion or the mare would come out on top. The former seemed protective over a spotted filly, but as she had apparently inserted herself into the argument and was not being actively attacked, Sidereal was not overly concerned. Not wanting to get directly involved but too curious to step away entirely, the white-speckled stallion drifted to the lone mare nearby.

"Hello," he greeted mildly, coming to a stop beside her. "Summer is much nicer at night, isn't it? This meadow must have been unpleasant during the day, under the sun without much shade." His manner and tone were casual, relaxed—as if this were just another casual conversation, which it was.

Neither of them were getting into a fight, after all.
