Surya had slunk off after that, leaving the pretty, nameless mare to the two stallions who had clearly taken a liking to her. The mare had not seemed bothered either, even going so far as to circle one as if he were the prey instead of the predator. Who was to notice if the small pale mare was even still standing there or not? They were clearly preoccupied. Although, it did leave her curious as to what had happened after that. Did the mare end up going with the striped stallion, or the draft? Or had she eluded them both?


It had been several seasons since then, and Surya had learned plenty in the time spent watching the Commons. This was a place of seeming equality; where either a stallion or a mare could lay claim. Nothing like that existed where she had been born, where stallions had always ruled. Still, it was primarily stallions washing ashore to take mares back home. Thankfully, Surya had not been victim to the scrap of teeth and brutish advances. Either she had not been spotted, or simply not noticed in comparison to the other mares that had lingered here.


As the last rays of dusk washed the land in an orangish hue, the little mare finally ventured out of her place among the trees. Her intentions weren’t to socialize, as she didn’t approach anyone. Dropping her head to graze, she was thankful the snow was melted and she no longer had to paw away the powder for the dead stalks beneath. Snatching up the tender green blades, Surya spent idle time there grazing alone into the nighttime hours.
