There was a sadness deep in his dark eyes. He could not escape it anymore, it had become part of him. It had woven itself like poison vines through his very spirit. It was the same look in the eyes of the stallion next to him. Gael could recognize the signs of a broken heart, he knew intimately the face of longing. The accent is quaint, it makes his ears twitch in a funny way. Gael looks up at Fearghas and he understands the words coming from his mouth, he can feel the same sorts of hurts poking at him deep down.
It doesn’t change, he thinks to himself, not even with time. There had been a moment when he thought things would be different after the influx of minutes and hours and days. Then years went by and the sting remained. Gael chews softly. His eyes sweep across the landscape spreading out around them, the quiet hum of bugs hidden in the swaths of shadows.
“I don’t think it matters,” Gael says, mostly to himself. There is a sigh, then a quiet shift of his weight. He tilts his face toward Fearghas. “It was so long ago now that I doubt anyone remembers her anymore.”
And he knows better, he does, it feels less painful to think about it that way though. Maybe he can convince himself she wasn’t even real. That the burning in his chest is his own design. “I never forgot about her though, she was from the Peak. It’s been a very long time since I spoke to anyone, you know, it feels like a lifetime now.”
Gael smiles, the barest edges. It does not reach his eyes, which have looked away from Fearghas and trained themselves on the world instead.
