Time for tragic lost medal tale to be told.

COLLECTORS get very excited about certain military medals.

The Victoria Cross, the highest military decoration, was introduced in 1856 and examples are highly prized by those who look to acquire such things.

A local military historian, Charles Sandbach, has revived a mystery during his current campaign to honour two local VC heroes � Pte Frank Jefferson and Lt Willward Sandys-Clarke.

Frank Jefferson, who won his medal in the Battle of Monte Cassino in 1944, became a familiar figure in Bolton pubs in subsequent years and I remember hearing stories that he had �lost� his most precious possession.

The general presumption at that time was that he had sold his VC, perhaps to pay for his drinking lifestyle.

But we have now learned from Mr Sandbach that the medal was stolen from his home in 1978 and that the theft led directly to his suicide � he threw himself under a train close to Trinity Street station.

The medal has never been found and Mr Sandbach believes it is now in America.

He is probably correct, but there must be somebody still alive in Bolton who knows the full story.

The time is right for it to be told.
