Memory or not, Bones knows he's not some meek little boy. And by all accounts that's exactly what he was being right now. He was stunned by his own actions...or non-actions, specifically. He'd found a mare, decided she'd be his first claim and he's commented on the weather. If he could remember his dad, he was sure he'd be smacking him upside the head and calling him stupid.
The crinkling of his nostrils and pinch of his brow signals his displeasure as he throws up his head. His ears, tinged in the barest of golds, flatten against the knotted mass of his cream mane. Normally he'd have barked a laugh at the sarcasm, even if it was directed at him. Hell, Bone probably would have egged her on in different circumstances. Today, something was off and he couldn't quite place it. Her dry comment leaves his mind reeling and his tail thrashing against the backs of his legs instead.
"There will be plenty of time for introductions later," his voice is deeper than before, matching the dark expression on his face. He shakes himself free of the accumulating snow that began to reappear along his marked back. Bone moves with purpose, gone is the languid pussy-footing of earlier. He arches his thick neck, protecting his throat, and approaches the mare. He doesn't avoid her hind end but keeps his eyes on her as he moves around her, almost as if he was challenging her to try and make a fight of it.
His teeth, barely yet yellowing with age, part and he nips at her shadow dusted haunches. "Come," he says, "The savanna is north of here." His expressions remains unchanging, as if daring her to tell him otherwise. And it becomes quite clear why he has so many scars. |
