She follows the roan colt to the shore at a distance. Rose is drawn to the ocean as well, though perhaps for different reasons; her mother had appeared to worship it, and the red filly seems to have inherited the attachment. There is something about the whispering of the waves when the tide is low that is a song to her.

Rose hangs back, watching as Wolf strides right into the waves. They haven’t spoken very much, so the bay yearling is hesitant to call them friends, but she knows that they are somehow related on their fathers’ sides and so she has attached herself quietly to him. She knows very little about her own father, not even his name or the nature of his relation to Hound; only that he bears the same kind of monster that Wolf’s father does.

Despite her unwillingness to converse with him, Rose is certain that Wolf also carries this monster. She can kind of… see it, in the way he considers obstacles and the expressions he makes when he thinks she isn’t watching (or when Rose things he thinks she isn’t watching, anyway). It makes her envious; where is her monster? The beast seems to carry with it a kind of power, and Rose wants it, ignorant or unwilling to acknowledge the price that comes with it.

At the edge of the sand and trees, she pins her ears briefly with jealousy. She knows Wolf probably doesn’t have the answers for her; no one ever seems to. Maybe if her mother was still around she could ask the sea for answers, something Rose also apparently can’t do. In a momentary fit of rage, the red filly lets out a buck and takes off to thrash for a bit in the waves, not at all caring that Wolf will witness her tantrum.
