In 1980, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Weiskoffe both shot opening rounds of 63 in the 1980 US Open. Those opening round 63s have stood for years in golf history. It was at Baltusrol in NJ which was about 10 miles from my parents house. I drove up from DC and went to the Open on Friday. I bought a ticket at the gate for $12 which included free parking, shuttle bus,and entry to the Open.
I was absolute amazed at the course, the grass, the whole event operation. I still have some stuff in a closet from that Open. This was big as Nicklaus went on to win the Open and later that year the PGA at age 40. Every head line in every newspaper was "Jack is Back."
It was just a great moment in sports history.
A round of 63 has been shot by several others in majors but these were the first.
Today, their record of opening round 63s was broken at LACC. Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele both shot 62 in the opening round of the US Open.
I'm devastated! This is like taking Mount Rushmore, painting over the Presidential faces and replacing them with images Biden, Trump, Obama, and Carter!
