Todays partido at St. Jean de Luz...a first? Posted on July 11, 2023 at 07:55:30 PM by Jim
The matches are being posted to youtube pretty quick. Today's is already posted, and it is Olharan and Lopez vs. Goikoextea and Lekerika. And this is just a semi-final, so wow, what teams. The video came up on my youtube feed, so I started watching it.
Without giving it away, except what I'm about to discuss, in the very first point of the second set, Olharan catches a left side off the wall that looks a little shady. Leke then misses the very next catch off Olharan's return, and even though the commentary is all in French, Leke walks over to the judge and says something. They stop play, and one judge goes in the back and looks at a monitor for a replay of Olharan's catch in slow motion. So, I am assuming the players can now do "challenges" where they are allowed to ask for a review and a judge's final decision after review. That HAS to be a first in the jai alai world. Very cool.
