You're totally right...consultants now practice editorial journalism and news people are just performers. I get that.
And yes, David's a young, attractive guy compared to lackluster Nora and the old guy on CBS. They do a lot of network stuff here too but its not just for lack of small town spot news, they also save on staff filling time between commercials.
Actually I think good journalism except at 5 and 6 should always be a mix of local and national. And they should have a couple production teams that do one 60 minutes longer pieces every other day, and not just during ratings periods. All reporters should be able to work their beats and come up with a longer piece at least one a week. And yes, ya can't cover a decent size city without beats unless you're just following the morning papers which DO have beats. And sit on enterprise stories until high viewership Sunday nights, rather than run shit on slow weekends. I've always been surprised they don't run their varsity team, Sunday thru Thursday evenings where their audience is.
I used to do my best journalism one day a week doing a 2+ minute story, kinda hoping they were too long so got bumped to Sunday. You can almost do an in-depth piece with more than 1 intv in about 2:30 if it's a good topic. 3 minutes is even better. Thats what used to be 'series' length episodes but dragging stuff out into 5 parts wasn't a good way to present a topic because viewers don't always hang around for 5 straight nights. Even with crime stories, to do a 2 minute story, ya actually have to cover crimes with more than just a cop interview...which at best is just one point of view and rarely goes into motive or profiling the victim or perp.
